Offshore Platform Ladders — Marine-Grade Steel Access Solutions
Offshore oil and gas platforms operate in the most structurally demanding environment in any industry. Continuous salt spray, wave action in lower zones, hurricane and typhoon wind loads, potential hydrocarbon exposure in process areas, and severely restricted maintenance access combine to demand ladder materials and designs that can function for decades without intervention. A material choice that is cost-effective onshore becomes a liability offshore, where the cost of ladder replacement — including marine vessel mobilization, platform shutdown coordination, and safety case revision — can exceed the original equipment cost by an order of magnitude.
Dengtai supplies SS316 and duplex stainless steel ladders for fixed platforms, FPSO vessels, jack-up rigs, semi-submersibles, and offshore wind turbine transition pieces. Our products are specified to NORSOK, EN ISO 14122-4, DNV, and operator-specific engineering standards.
Industry Pain Points
Material under-specification is catastrophic offshore. An SS304 ladder on an offshore platform will develop pitting corrosion within 1-3 years in the splash zone and 5-10 years above the splash zone. HDG fails within 1-3 years in the splash zone due to accelerated zinc sacrificial corrosion. The minimum acceptable material for any offshore exterior application is SS316 (PREN 24-26). In the splash zone, duplex 2205 (PREN 34-36) is the industry standard. The material cost difference between SS304 and SS316 is approximately 40-50% — a fraction of the replacement cost offshore.
Wind loads at offshore design speeds. Offshore design wind speeds (60-70 m/s in the North Sea, higher in typhoon/hurricane regions) far exceed the 45 m/s design basis for standard onshore ladders. A ladder designed for onshore wind loads, installed offshore without reinforcement, may fail at bracket connections during a storm event. Bracket spacing, side rail dimensions, and anchor specifications must be calculated for the platform location’s specific metocean data.
NORSOK and operator-specific requirements. Norwegian NORSOK standards add requirements beyond EN ISO 14122-4: working environment provisions (S-002), materials selection principles (M-001), and manufacturer qualification (M-650). Individual operators layer additional requirements through their engineering standards (Equinor TR, Shell DEP, PETRONAS PTS, Total GS). The documentation package for offshore projects is substantially more extensive than for onshore industrial applications.
Galvanic corrosion at structure interfaces. Offshore platforms are predominantly carbon steel structures. Bolting an SS316 ladder directly to carbon steel creates a galvanic cell in the presence of saltwater electrolyte — the carbon steel corrodes sacrificially around each bracket. Insulating gaskets (PTFE or EPDM) between SS316 brackets and the carbon steel structure, with insulating washers on the bolts, are mandatory.

Material Grades for Offshore Service
| Material | EN Grade | PREN | Yield Strength | Offshore Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SS316 | EN 1.4401 | 24-26 | 220 MPa | Above splash zone; platform interior; North Sea standard for non-immersed structural |
| SS316L | EN 1.4404 | 24-26 | 200 MPa | Low-carbon variant for extensive welding; prevents weld sensitization |
| Duplex 2205 | EN 1.4462 | 34-36 | 450 MPa | Splash zone; high-strength where weight reduction matters; PREN > 34 |
| Super Duplex 2507 | EN 1.4410 | 40+ | 550 MPa | Immersed zone; deepwater; extreme chloride environments |
Rule: Never use SS304 or HDG for any offshore exterior application. The corrosion failure timeline is measured in single-digit years, not decades.
NORSOK Compliance Summary

For NORSOK-specified projects, Dengtai provides the full documentation package: material certification, manufacturing procedure qualification records, and Declaration of Conformity referencing applicable NORSOK clauses.
Case Study: PETRONAS RAPID Coastal Refinery, Malaysia (2020)
Client: PETRONAS (Malaysian national oil company).
Project: Pengerang Integrated Complex (RAPID) — coastal refinery and petrochemical development, Johor, Malaysia.
Scope: 35 heavy-duty caged ladders + 22 platforms.
Challenge: The refinery’s coastal Johor location created a combined industrial + marine corrosion environment (salt-laden monsoon air + process chemical exposure from H2S, SO2, and hydrocarbon vapors). Multiple process units required material-specific ladder solutions. PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) imposed requirements exceeding EN ISO 14122-4, including platform loading at 5.0 kN/m2 (2x industry standard).
Solution: CL-SS316-STD caged ladders for all process units with hydrocarbon and H2S exposure. CL-HDG-HD heavy-duty Q345B caged ladders (enhanced HDG 100+ microns) for non-sour process areas and utility zones. All-SS316 fasteners for marine atmosphere corrosion resistance. Platforms designed to PETRONAS PTS 5.0 kN/m2 loading. Bureau Veritas third-party inspection prior to each shipment batch.
Result: All 57 access structures handed over on schedule. Zero non-compliance findings at final client walkdown. Dengtai approved on PETRONAS vendor list for subsequent projects.
Frequently Asked Questions
SS316 vs duplex 2205 — which do I need?
For above-splash-zone applications (the majority of platform ladders), SS316 is the standard and provides 25-30 year service life. Specify duplex 2205 for: splash zone installations subject to seawater wetting/drying; locations where the 2x higher yield strength of duplex allows weight reduction; or where the operator specification requires PREN > 30. Duplex costs 2-3x SS316.
Do offshore ladders need classification society certification?
Ladders are covered under the platform’s overall structural certification. Dengtai provides material traceability (EN 10204 3.1), weld quality records, and dimensional inspection reports for the classification surveyor’s review. For specifically classed components (helideck safety equipment), we provide documentation to the applicable class rules.
How are wind loads addressed for offshore?
We design to the platform location’s metocean data — typically 60-70 m/s for the North Sea. Bracket spacing, side rail section, and anchor specifications are calculated for the site-specific wind pressure, which can be 3-5x higher than onshore values. Provide the platform metocean design basis with your inquiry.
How is galvanic corrosion managed at the ladder-structure interface?
PTFE or EPDM insulating gaskets between SS316 bracket plates and carbon steel structure. SS316 bolts with insulating washers. This breaks the electrical path that would otherwise drive galvanic corrosion of the carbon steel at each bracket contact point.
