how-to-measure-for-custom-ladder

Accurate field measurements are the foundation of a correctly fabricated custom ladder. This guide walks you through the five measurements every custom ladder order requires, common measurement errors, and how to document your measurements for the manufacturer.

Five Essential Measurements

1. Vertical Height (H1)

Measure from the finished ground level to the landing surface level (top of platform, roof surface, or mezzanine floor). This is NOT the ladder length — the ladder must extend above the landing.

Tool: Laser distance meter (preferred) or tape measure.
Common error: Measuring to the underside of the landing instead of the top surface.

2. Wall-to-Obstruction Clearance

Measure the distance from the wall surface to the nearest obstruction on each side of the proposed ladder location. The ladder requires:

  • 800mm clearance on each side for a caged ladder
  • 400mm clearance on each side for an uncaged ladder

3. Substrate Type and Condition

Document: wall material (concrete, brick, steel), whether hollow or solid, approximate age, any visible cracks or damage near the proposed bracket positions.

4. Ground Condition

Document: finished ground material (concrete, asphalt, gravel, soil), whether the ground is level, whether future paving or grading is planned.

5. Overhead Clearance

Measure any overhead obstructions (eaves, pipe racks, cable trays, adjacent equipment) that could conflict with the ladder extending above the landing.

Documenting Your Measurements

Send the manufacturer:

  1. A dimensioned sketch (hand-drawn is acceptable — clarity matters more than artistry)
  2. Photographs from: directly in front of the wall, from the left side, from the right side, looking up from the base, and looking down from the landing (if accessible)
  3. A PDF or Excel measurement table listing each of the five measurements above

FAQ

Q: What if I make a measurement error?

Contact the manufacturer immediately. If caught before fabrication, the drawing can be revised. If caught after fabrication, the ladder may need to be modified or replaced. Always double-check measurements — and have a second person independently verify critical dimensions.

Q: Can Dengtai send someone to measure?

We can recommend local measurement services in select regions. For most international projects, we provide detailed measurement instructions and review your submitted measurements and photographs for consistency before proceeding to fabrication.
