ladder-pricing-comparison-by-material-2026

Author: Jouth Zhao, Senior Engineer, Dengtai Staircase Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

Material choice is the single largest cost driver in steel ladder procurement. This article provides transparent pricing for HDG, SS304, and SS316 ladder configurations and explains what drives the price differences between materials.

2026 Pricing: Dengtai Standard Models (FOB Shijiazhuang)

Model Material Height Price (USD) Price per Meter
FL-HDG-STD Q235B HDG 6m $138 $23.00/m
CL-HDG-STD Q235B HDG 6m $180 $30.00/m
FL-SS304-STD SS304 6m $369 $61.50/m
CL-SS304-STD SS304 6m $462 $77.00/m
FL-SS316-STD SS316 6m $438 $73.00/m
CL-SS316-STD SS316 6m $690 $115.00/m

What Drives Material Price Differences?

Factor HDG (Q235B) SS304 SS316
Raw material cost ~$692/tonne ~$2,538/tonne (3.7×) ~$4,615/tonne (6.7×)
Processing cost $390/tonne $880/tonne $1,450/tonne
Welding cost Standard MIG TIG (slower, more skilled) TIG (same as SS304 + filler cost)
Surface treatment cost Galvanizing ($0.30-0.50/kg) Pickling + passivation ($0.80-1.20/kg) Same as SS304 + premium

Raw material is the dominant factor. SS316 costs 6.7× more per tonne than Q235B — and this flows directly to the finished product price.

FAQ

Q: Why is SS316 so much more expensive than SS304?

Molybdenum. SS316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, which provides pitting resistance in chloride environments. Molybdenum is an expensive alloying element (~$45,000/tonne). That 2-3% molybdenum content accounts for most of the price premium over SS304.

Q: Is SS316 always worth the premium?

In C5-M (marine) environments: yes. The 115% price premium over SS304 buys 3-5× longer service life in chloride-rich conditions. In C3 (urban) environments: no — SS304 or even HDG will perform adequately at much lower cost.
