Product Overview

The CL-SS316-STD is Dengtai”s marine-grade caged ladder. SS316 (EN 1.4401) contains 2-3% molybdenum — the element that provides chloride pitting resistance absent in SS304. This is the ladder specified for offshore platforms, coastal installations, chemical plants, and water treatment facilities.

The Molybdenum Difference

In marine environments, airborne salt spray deposits chloride ions on metal surfaces. These chlorides attack the passive chromium oxide layer that protects stainless steel. SS304 — without molybdenum — cannot resist this attack and develops pitting corrosion within 12-24 months in splash zone or heavy coastal exposure. SS316″s 2-3% molybdenum content forms a more stable passive layer that resists chloride penetration. The result: 15-25+ years of service life in environments that would destroy SS304 in 2 years.

When This Model Is Non-Negotiable

  • Offshore oil and gas platforms — DNV, ABS, Lloyd”s Register class requirements mandate SS316 for external fixed access.
  • Coastal installations within 5km of the sea — airborne chloride concentrations exceed SS304″s resistance threshold.
  • Chemical processing plants — acid or alkali exposure demands SS316″s broader chemical resistance.
  • Water and wastewater treatment — chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, and fluctuating pH levels attack lesser materials.

Total Cost of Ownership

The CL-SS316-STD at $115/m is the most expensive model in the standard range. However, total cost of ownership tells a different story. An HDG ladder in a coastal environment may need replacement in 3-5 years ($30/m × 2 replacements = $60/m over 10 years). The SS316 ladder at $115/m lasts 20+ years in the same environment — roughly $5.75/m/year. The premium is not in the purchase price; the premium is in avoiding the cost of premature failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is SS316 so much more expensive than SS304?+
The 2-3% molybdenum content in SS316 is the cost driver. Molybdenum is a relatively rare alloying element. The difference in raw material cost accounts for roughly 80% of the price difference between SS304 and SS316. The remaining 20% is the more specialised manufacturing process required for SS316.
How long will SS316 last in a marine environment?+
15-25+ years in typical marine splash zone applications. The molybdenum content provides chloride pitting resistance that SS304 lacks. For continuously submerged applications, super-duplex stainless (UNS S32750) may be required — contact engineering.
Is SS316 worth the premium for a coastal building?+
Yes. An HDG ladder in a coastal environment may need replacement in 3-5 years. SS304 may last 5-10 years before visible pitting appears. SS316 at $115/m will last 20+ years. Over a 20-year building lifecycle, SS316 is actually the cheapest option when replacement costs are factored in.
