Grab bars and safety gates are two low-cost accessories that significantly improve ladder safety. They address the highest-risk moments in ladder use: transitioning onto and off the ladder at the top, and preventing unauthorized access at the bottom.
Grab Bars
Grab bars (or handrail extensions) at the top of a ladder provide a stable handhold as the climber transitions from the ladder onto the landing. They are especially important for walk-through extensions.
Requirements
| Standard | Grab Bar Requirement |
|---|---|
| OSHA 1910.23 | Handrails must extend 42 inches (1,067mm) above the landing on each side of the ladder opening |
| EN ISO 14122-4 | Handrails must extend 1,100mm above the landing |
| AS 1657 | Handrails at top of ladder extending minimum 900mm |
Specification
- Material: Match ladder material (HDG, SS304, SS316)
- Diameter: 33.7mm OD (standard handrail tube)
- Extension height: 1,067mm (OSHA) or 1,100mm (EN) above landing
- Mounting: Bolted to ladder stile extension or landing structure
Safety Gates (Security Doors)
A lockable safety gate at the base of a roof access ladder prevents unauthorized access. Many property insurance policies require lockable roof access.
Types
| Type | Mechanism | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Swing gate | Hinged gate that swings open/closed | Most common; simple and reliable |
| Sliding gate | Slides sideways on rails | Tight spaces where swing arc is obstructed |
| Self-closing gate | Spring-loaded; closes automatically | High-compliance environments |
Specification
- Material: Match ladder material or HDG as minimum
- Lock: Padlock-compatible hasp (padlock not included — use facility-standard lock)
- Signage: “Authorized Personnel Only” and “Roof Access — Keep Locked” signs included

FAQ
Q: Are grab bars required by OSHA?
Yes. OSHA 1910.23(d)(5) requires that the side rails of a ladder extend at least 42 inches above the landing and that grab bars be provided where the extension is used as a handhold. This is effectively a handrail requirement.
Q: Are safety gates required?
Not by OSHA directly, but many local building codes and insurance policies require lockable roof access. Check your local requirements.
