Power Generation Ladders — Steel Access for Power Plants

Power generation facilities — coal-fired, natural gas combined cycle, hydroelectric, and renewable — require permanent access ladders across multiple zones: boiler structures, turbine halls, coal handling and ash handling systems, cooling towers, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) units, and transmission switchyards. Each zone presents distinct environmental conditions — from abrasive coal dust to wet FGD chemical exposure to elevated temperatures near boilers — that determine the appropriate ladder material and design.

Dengtai supplied 28 steel platforms and 16 inspection ladders for the EVN Vinh Tan thermal power plant in Vietnam (2021), covering coal handling, ash handling, and warehouse access requirements. Standard HDG ladders from $23/m provide cost-effective, compliant access for power generation applications.

Industry Pain Points

Abrasive dust in coal handling zones. Coal dust and fly ash particulate are abrasive — they physically wear surfaces through continuous contact. They are also hygroscopic, absorbing atmospheric moisture and creating a mildly acidic slurry that accelerates corrosion. HDG provides the necessary combination of surface hardness (abrasion resistance) and zinc-layer corrosion protection for coal handling areas. The coating thickness of 80+ microns on standard HDG ladders provides an effective barrier. For particularly aggressive fly ash environments, enhanced 100+ micron HDG is recommended.

Elevated temperatures near boilers and HRSGs. Ambient air temperatures in boiler areas can reach 45-60C, and ladder surfaces in direct line-of-sight to hot equipment can reach 50-80C from radiated heat. HDG zinc coating begins to degrade at sustained temperatures above 200C — well above typical ambient ladder temperatures, but ladders should be located to avoid direct contact with uninsulated hot surfaces. Q345B structural steel provides higher strength retention at elevated temperatures compared to standard Q235B.

Corrosion in FGD and cooling water zones. Flue gas desulfurization units use limestone slurry to remove SO2 from flue gas — creating a wet, chemically aggressive environment with calcium sulfite/sulfate deposits. Cooling towers create constant moisture with biocide and corrosion inhibitor chemicals. SS316 is specified for ladders in both FGD and cooling tower zones where wet chemical exposure is continuous.

Vibration from rotating equipment. Turbine halls, pump rooms, and fan houses create continuous low-amplitude vibration that can loosen standard bolted connections over time. Anti-vibration locking washers, Nyloc nuts, or secondary retention on critical bracket connections prevent progressive loosening. For generator-attached ladders, a freestanding support frame decouples the ladder from the generator’s vibration.

Case Study: EVN Vinh Tan Thermal Power Plant, Vietnam (2021)

Client: Vietnam Electricity (EVN) — Vinh Tan Thermal Power Complex.
Project: Coal-fired thermal power plant, Binh Thuan Province, Vietnam.
Scope: 28 steel platforms + 16 inspection and access ladders.

Challenge: The coal handling, ash handling, and warehouse areas combined heavy dust (coal and fly ash particulate), elevated ambient temperatures from adjacent boiler and turbine equipment, and 24/7 operational schedules. Ladders needed to withstand the abrasive, dusty environment while remaining functional for daily inspection rounds by operations staff.

Solution: 16 ladders in two configurations: FL-HDG-STD fixed ladders for warehouse and non-process building access; CL-HDG-STD caged ladders for coal conveyor galleries and transfer towers where heights exceeded 7.3m. Standard HDG 80+ micron coating was adequate for most locations; 100+ micron enhanced coating was specified for ladders in the direct coal dust deposition zone adjacent to the crusher house. High-visibility safety yellow on bottom 2.5m for collision awareness in areas with front-end loader traffic.

Result: All ladders and platforms in service without corrosion or structural issues. The HDG coating withstood the abrasive coal dust environment without accelerated wear. The project established Dengtai’s capability in power generation — an industry segment requiring reliable, cost-effective access solutions rather than the premium stainless steel requirements of oil and gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does coal dust damage galvanized ladders?
Coal dust itself is abrasive but does not chemically attack galvanized coatings. The risk is that coal dust combined with atmospheric moisture forms a mildly acidic slurry (sulfuric acid from pyrite oxidation in coal) that can accelerate zinc consumption. In practice, a standard 80-micron HDG coating provides 15-20 year service life in typical coal handling environments. For high-sulfur coal or high-dust-deposition locations, the 100+ micron enhanced HDG is recommended.

Do I need stainless steel for a gas turbine power plant?
Gas turbine and combined cycle plants are generally cleaner environments than coal-fired plants. HDG is adequate for the majority of access points — turbine hall (if not client-specified as SS304 for appearance), HRSG structure, cooling system, and balance-of-plant. SS316 is specified only for cooling tower and water treatment chemical areas. Confirm the plant’s specific environmental conditions.

What ladder material near electrical equipment?
For ladders within the reach envelope of energized switchgear, busbars, or transformers: the ladder is a metal structure and must be bonded to the facility grounding grid. Dengtai wall brackets include a bonding lug connection. In outdoor switchyards, maintain the electrical safety clearance distances per the applicable code (NFPA 70 / IEC 61936). The ladder material (HDG or stainless) does not affect the electrical safety requirements — grounding is the key control.

How do I manage vibration on ladders near turbine-generators?
Use anti-vibration locking washers or Nyloc nuts on bracket connections. For ladders directly attached to generator enclosures or turbine hall structures, a freestanding support frame is preferred — it decouples the ladder from structure-borne vibration and prevents progressive loosening of anchor bolts.
